Northern Macedonia is the country of choice for a fantastic cycling trip. In 8 days you will discover this beautiful country in the Balkan islands, guided by GPS navigation. Northern Macedonia is characterized by beautiful nature, rich history, friendly people and low-traffic, well-paved, roads.

During this individual bicycle tour, you will cycle through Mavrovo National Park and the routes will pass many small rivers and as many as 4 lakes! Ohrid, located on the

lake of the same name, is also called the place of 365 monasteries: one for every day.

You will cycle through the beautiful Mavrovo National Park, the largest national park in the Balkan region. Explore the grassy plateaus and mountain ridges surrounding the Mali Sar, which in summer are dotted with countless mountain flowers. Shepherds have been migrating into the mountains with their flocks of sheep since time immemorial to escape the summer heat of the valleys. There is ample opportunity to visit some of these fine structures during this cycling vacation.

In short, there is much to see in this beautiful area of flora, fauna and history!

Cycling in northern Macedonia

While cycling in Northern Macedonia, you will see the rich history of the country. Turkish influences in particular, as a result of centuries of domination by the Ottoman Empire, can be seen in Macedonian culture.

The country’s capital is Skopje. This city was destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1963. The old marketplace was largely spared and was able to retain its oriental atmospheres.

The stone bridge, with 55 arches over the Vardar River, is one of the most beautiful attractions. Many Islamic influences can still be seen around this bridge, especially in the Turkish quarter. This district was created after Sultan Mehmed II had the bridge built by Turks.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

The old town of Ohrid is a must-see. It is not for nothing that this place is on the Unesco World Heritage List.

Ohrid is a true open-air museum with beautiful ancient churches, such as the magnificent Sveti Jovan Kaneo, built on an overhanging cliff above the lake, and Sveti Clement at Plaosnik with extraordinary frescoes and icons.

Atop the city’s hill you will discover the medieval castle of Bulgarian Tsar Samuil. The castle was built around 1018 and gives a magnificent view of Ohrid and the lake.

Day 1

Arrival.

On your own, you will fly to Ohrid. Transfer time to the hotel in Ohrid is 15 minutes. Should you arrive early this is a great day to explore the old town of Ohrid.
Rental bikes will be handed over to you at the end of the afternoon

Day 2

Round trip Mavrovo Lake, 32 km (250 hm)

Breakfast is followed by an approximately 1.5-hour transfer to Mavrovo, the starting point of your first bike ride. Here you will collect the rental bikes. Mavrovo lies at an altitude of 1,300 meters, in the middle of Mavrovo National Park. The bike ride leads you through the enchanting nature surrounding Lake Mavrovo.

Day 3

Mavrovo-Debar, 53 km (200 hm)

You will follow the Radika River downstream, passing the monastery of John the Baptist along the way. You will cycle through an impressive gorge with lots of greenery after leaving the shores of Lake Mavrovo. Along the way, you will pass the monastery of St. John the Baptist. Strategically located and known for its typical carvings, this monastery is well worth a visit. This is also a nice place for lunch at the restaurant, at the bottom of the monastery. Then the route continues to Debar, where you will spend the night at a hotel overlooking Lake Debar.

Day 4

Debar-Vevcani 48 km (450 hm) or 55 km (700 hm)

You will cycle through a wooded area and past several farming villages. Everywhere you can hear the sound of flowing mountain streams and water features. You will spend the night in the extraordinary town of Vevcani. This village is reminiscent of Italy with its terraces and architectural style.

Day 5

Round trip Vevcani, (49 km)

Today’s route is virtually flat except for the beginning and end. The bike ride goes through the lower valley. A rural setting with narrow paved roads, villages and a wide variety of fruit trees. At the end there is a climb of about 4 km, back to the hotel in Vevcani. A hike to the water springs of Vevcani is also highly recommended.

Day 6

Vevcani-Ohrid, 36 km (200 hm) or 55 km (200 hm), asphalt/unpaved)

Today’s bike ride is again enjoyable on the way to Ohrid. Vevcani lies at an altitude of 850 meters and you will cycle to the lower Lake Ohrid at 700 meters. The route goes through small villages interspersed with farmland. Halfway along the route, you cycle to Kalista, an impressive church carved into the rocks, on the shores of Lake Ohrid. For many, this is an important place of pilgrimage. You should definitely have seen it!
After about 20 km you will reach Struga, a busy town located directly on the lake. The Black Drim flows right through this town and on either side of this river are many eateries and stores and a prime spot for lunch or a cup of coffee.

After Struga, you will cycle entirely along Lake Ohrid and reach the hotel for the next 2 days via the Ohrid promenade.

Day 7

Rest day, short bike ride (30 km) possible and if applicable transfer to hotel in Skopje

There is plenty to do in and around Ohrid. For example, there is a bazar within walking distance in the center or you can take a nice walk past beautiful monasteries and through the old town. Another highly recommended trip is a boat ride on Lake Ohrid. Of course, you can also choose to take one last bike ride through Ohrid’s agricultural hinterland.

Day 8

Transfer to Ohrid airport or Skopje airport

On this last day, you will be transferred to Ohrid airport. Depending on your flight schedule, you can still spend this day at leisure.
