Northern Macedonia, before the breakup of Yugoslavia, was that country’s southernmost province and has since been an independent republic sandwiched between Albania and Greece, among others. Southwestern North Macedonia is characterized by large lakes and National Parks with beautiful hiking areas.
This destination has not yet been discovered by the general public. This surprising country in the Balkans is characterized by beautiful nature, rich history and a friendly population.

Northern Macedonia has a rich history and this can be seen everywhere, especially the Turkish influences resulting from centuries of domination by the Ottoman Empire can be seen in Northern Macedonian culture.

During this hiking vacation, you can effortlessly hike 6 to 8 hours, marveling at the beautiful nature of northern Macedonia each time.

Discovering while walking.

You will hike through 2 natural parks and the beautiful Jablanica Mountains during this vacation,. The first 2 days you will stay in the Mavrvovo Natinonal Park in the highest village in the Balkans; Lazaropole. The views are not only breathtaking but you are also staying in the cleanest air in the Balkans. For the next 2 days, your lodging is a cozy accommodation in Vevcani, located on the lower parts of the Jablanica Mountains, the natural dividing line between Albania and northern Macedonia. The flora and fauna around this mountain range here have hardly been affected by man, and this mountain range is also habitat for the rare Balkan Lynx. The last part of your hiking vacation you will stay in Ohrid. Ohrid is a lively city with a rich past and is located directly on Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest lakes in the world. This place is an ideal base for hiking in the nearby Galicica National Park. Ohrid used to be called the place of 365 monasteries; one for every day. There is ample opportunity during this vacation to see some of these beautiful structures during the city walk in the old part of Ohrid.

Day 1

Arrival at Ohrid airport, transfer to lazarapole

After arriving at Ohrid airport, our driver will take you to the mountain village of Lazarpole. Transfer time is about 1.5 hours. Lazarapole is a small village, in the Mavrovo National Park and is hidden among the mountains on a plateau at an altitude of about 1350 meters and the ideal place to unwind. After arrival, you can explore the area. Short walk (5 km) possible. In the evening, get acquainted with Macedonian cuisine.

Day 2

After breakfast it is time for a nice walk of about 15km through the Bistra Mountains (Lazaropole-Tresonce-Lazaropole). In Tresonce you also have the opportunity to extend the walk for 6 km along the river of Tresonce to the waterfall of Bilijana and the cave of Alilica. The chances are quite small that you will meet a tourist during this hike After the hike you can enjoy a drink on the hotel terrace.

Day 3

After breakfast, transfer to the next overnight location in Vevcani. Vevcani is a cozy Balkan village with many terraces and several eateries and is located on the foothills of the Jablanica Mountains. This mountain range forms the natural separation between northern Macedonia and Albania. Vevcani is an old village and in the immediate vicinity are numerous churches chapels and monasteries.The most famous of these is the Sveti Spas monastery located in the mountains above the village. The biggest event held annually in Vevcani is the carnival. . During these days, many thousands of tourists flock to the village to view the devils, demons and other mythical figures in the village. You can choose from several short walks to get to know the area a little better. A hike to the water springs of Vevcani is possible as well as a hike to the monastery of St. Joseph at 1300 meters. Spas (2-3 hours). You will hike through a veritable fairytale forest to the monastery with fantastic views of the valley of Struga and Ohrid.

Day 4

Today you can choose from 2 different hiking routes through the Jablanica Mountains. The longest variant is a tough hike of about 8-9 hours with the highest point being 2250 meters near the border with Albania. Along the way you will pass Lake Lokva where large sheep herds with shepherds can often be seen. The shorter 15-km version makes a loop through the vast ancient forests to the village of Gorna Belica

Day 5

After breakfast follows a transfer of about 30 minutes to the pearl of the Balkans: Ohrid. Today is an excellent day to explore on foot this extraordinary city located on one of the oldest lakes in the world . The city tour has a length of 7 km and has many high lights such as the Roman amphitheater and Tsar Samuels’ fortress and many old beautiful churches. There is too much to mention and you will be short of eyes. From the fortress you have a great view of the city and the lake. You can also take a boat trip across the lake to Sveti Naum.

Day 6

You will take a beautiful walk through the Galicica Nalional park. The length of the hike is 16 km and begins in the mountain village of Velestovo. The driver will take you from the hotel to the starting point. Halfway through, you will reach the (almost) deserted village of Konsjko. This village was abandoned after World WarII due to a lack of drinking water. Most residents were moved to lower-lying Dolna Konshko. In Konsjko you will find a restaurant for lunch. Then continue your way and hike back to the shores of the lake and back to the hotel in Ohrid.

Day 7

Unfortunately, today is already the last hike on the program of this vacation. This hike starts again in Velestovo and you will hike along a different path towards Konsjko. You can use the restaurant there again for lunch. Then the hike continues to the village of Elshan. Here you can take a rest at the village water spring before descending to the fishing village of Pestani, a cozy lakeside village with several terraces. Here you can take the bus or cab to the hotel in Ohrid. This hike is 14 km long.
