After arriving at Seville, take the train to Merida. The duration of the train trip is about 3.5 hours. There are 2 trains per day from Seville to Merida. If you arrive in the afternoon you will still have time for a walk through this extraordinary city.

Sight seeing Merida. By train or bus to Caceres

After breakfast, explore Merida; a city with tremendous Roman history, located on the Guadjana River. This city was founded 25 B.C. by the Roman emperor Augustus. During the Moorish rule in the 8th century, the city was largely destroyed. Nevertheless, Mérida still has many well-preserved and restored monuments and sights from this Roman period, several of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
You will travel by train or bus to Caceres. The old core of Caceres sits atop a walled hill. Here you will walk through a 15th-century city built in an austere Renaissance style with several palaces, convents and hidden courtyards. The old town is teeming with storks that nest here. Because of this, the inner city is designated as a protected bird area.

On the bike to Trujillo (45 km 500↑m)

The first bike ride of your cycling adventure, begins with an easy ride, mostly on the almost traffic-free old national road so you can fully enjoy the surroundings. This is of today is relatively short and easy so that you have plenty of time left to explore the extraordinary overnight town of Trujillo.
Trujillo.is a very beautiful and pleasant town and the birthplace of Francisco Pizarro, Orellana and others of Americas conquistadores.
Enjoy a walk around the 13th -century city walls, with wide views of the plateau. Wander the narrow streets, past squares and gardens with medieval mansions and palaces everywhere. Ending the day with dinner on a terrace at the beautiful Plaza Mayor completes the day

On the way to Berzocana (56 km 820↑m)

Today's bike ride is a lot spicier and actually consists of 2 different parts: first you cycle through the "Llanos de Belén" an undulating steppe famous among birdwatchers. Even without binoculars, many species can be seen. Further on, past the only village you will encounter today, you cycle through a completely different environment. The landscape becomes quite hilly here, and "dehesas" form the backdrop. Dehesas are thin forests, or rather meadows, dotted with holm or cork oaks. They make an ideal habitat for livestock and wildlife. Watch for animals that may be about to cross the road such as the large pale green lizard or the Egyptian mongoose, with its elongated, dark stature; while colorful birds flit along the road, like hoopoe, bee-eater or meadowlark. After 56 km you will reach your overnight spot; a quiet village in the middle of the flanks of the mountain.

To Guadalupe (32 km 780↑m).

After breakfast, a spectacular and challenging bike ride is scheduled with a very steep 3 km climb to the top of the sierras. In the beginning you will cycle through a lush Mediterranean forest, with on the higher parts a variance of gorse and heather and substantial rock formations After reaching the summit, there is a long descent where you can enjoy a wide view with birds of prey hovering above you.
The last part of the descent brings you into the valley of Guadalupe, a lovely village and pilgrimage site for the whole Spanish speaking world. In the afternoon, visit the most beautiful monastery in Extremadura: the stunningly beautiful Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe.

Guadalupe – Navatrasierra (39 km 790↑m).

Today's route begins with a short climb out of the valley of Guadalupe. You will cycle on a gently descending undulating road for a while. Then follows a beautiful climb of about 10 km from the Alto del Hospital: Here the road winds uphill with moderate gradients through a beautiful forest, before descending through a secluded valley covered with white and pink cactus bushes and dense groves of strawberry trees. Most of today's route goes through a nature reserve with old cork and holm oaks at every turn and the chances of encountering deer here are quite high. In short, a beautiful ride through nature where the first village you encounter is also your overnight location: Navatrasierra, a small village where Spanish pensionados are busy maintaining their vegetable gardens. This place is so remote that chances are you will be the only visitor here.

Navatrasierra – Talavera de la Reina (75 km 600↑m)

The cycling vacation concludes with the longest bike ride but is anything but, tough except for the first few kilometers. It begins with a gradual climb and descent over the last ridge of the tour. Then you leave the sierras of Extremadura behind and enter the lower terrain of the province of Toledo. There are varied dehesa, steppes and Mediterranean vegetation. Part of the ride takes you along the best part of the "Via Verde de la Jara," This bike path on an old railroad track leads through a hilly landscape with beautiful views of the Tagus River.
Final destination is Talavera de la Reina, known for its ceramics of which you can also visit a museum. It is a cheerful, fun town devoid of tourists. It is an ideal place to end this cycling adventure, fittingly, in one of the many tapas bars and enjoy a variety of tapas at reasonable prices.
