Day to day
Should you have an early flight today, you can already explore the city after checking into the hotel. For participants with a later arrival: no worries. Tomorrow you will have the entire day for yourself to explore the city.
Overnight stay in Bilbao
Participants who arrived late yesterday will have plenty of time today to explore this beautiful city.
Bilbao is located in the valley of the Nervión River. A visit to the extraordinary Guggenheim Museum should not be missed. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is an iconic art museum, opened in 1997 and designed by architect Frank Gehry. It is known for its spectacular, undulating titanium facade and is considered a masterpiece of modern architecture. The museum houses contemporary art and has played a major role in the renewal of the city of Bilbao – also known as the “Bilbao Effect.” Inside, you will find both permanent collections and major temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art – from installations and sculptures to painting and multimedia. Outside, exhibits include the famous flower puppy “Puppy” by Jeff Koons and the spider “Maman” by Louise Bourgeois. In the evening we stroll through the casco viejo, the old quarter in the center, and enjoy delicious pintxos y vinos
Overnight stay in Bilbao
We start the day with a transfer (1.5 hours) to Peñacerrada. the starting point of the bike route where we will also be handed out the rental bikes. After 10 km we reach the top of a ridge. This forms the natural division between the Basque Country and La Rioja. The deciduous forests and vast meadows of the Basque Country give way to the climate and Mediterranean vegetation of la Rioja.
We continue our way along winding roads between vineyards and along the river Ebro. Here you can choose the extra loop to a chapel located in a beautiful spot. You pass several villages, all with good opportunity for a break. In the evening, explore the larger village of Laguardia, beautifully situated on a hill with an authentic core.
Overnight in Laguardia
Today’s ride is all about wine and we cycle through the vineyards around Laguardia, always with beautiful views of the mountains, which protect this region from the north wind. The narrow roads will lead us around hills and through gorges up to the Ebro River, after a final climb we will reach our destination for the day: Logroño.
Logroño is the capital of La Rioja, one of Spain’s most precious wine regions, and is a lively town with many squares and wine bars. In the afternoon, you can visit most of the wineries with a rich history in this city. In the late afternoon, we visit Bodegas Franco Españolas; a winery with a rich history. Here we get an explanation of this Rioja wine region, known for its famous red wines, characterized by its powerful, smoky and tannic character. The tour concludes with a tasting.
Overnight stay in Logroño
Today we start the program early. We take the scheduled bus from Logroño to Soria, The bus ride is anything but boring and takes us over the mountain pass and there opens up a totally different kind of landscape through which we will be cycling for the next 4 days: the Castilian plateau.
Before we begin the bike ride, we first take a stroll through Soria to get a taste of the provincial atmosphere after which a cab will take us to the start of the bike route: the village of Cabrejas del Pinar. Sleepy villages, varied nature and, above all, silence form a perfect backdrop. Along the way, you can choose a short or a longer ride. The longer option will take you up to the medieval gem of Calatañazor. We spend the night in a SPA hotel in El Burgo de Osma, a historic town with a beautiful old core and Plaza Mayor to enjoy the evening.
Overnight stay in El Burgo de Osma
Today we cycle in the area with an eventful history but almost completely depopulated in the present time.
The first part is easy and we can enjoy the wide scenery. After crossing the Duero River, the road begins to ascend through a wide valley at first. As time passes, the valley narrows into a gorge where it is noticeable that the environment begins to become more rugged. Caracena is a pretty, old village where today only a few people live. Over the hill behind it you will discover its castle, in the middle of a magnificently isolated environment. Further on in the ride you have before you the ruins of the largest castle from the time of the Caliphate of Cordoba: Gormaz, in the 11th century a castle over which entire armies fought, today long since abandoned.
Our destination today is Berlanga de Duero, a typical Castilian old village with another imposing castle in the background.
Overnight stay in Berlanga de Duero
Today there is again the possibility to choose from 2 different cycling routes. If you can’t make the choice yet, no problem because the split of the bike routes is only after about 30 km. Both routes go over narrow roads with hardly any traffic. They meander between hills and rocky outcrops in a harmonious combination of fields, scrub and steppe-like vegetation. During the short variant there is also the choice to visit the medieval town of Rello. The peculiarity of this village is that the houses are formed from piled stones and wooden beams. You can see Atienza looming on the horizon far in advance. This is because the village and castle are built on a hill. Atienza is not only loved by visitors but is also regularly used as a backdrop for movies and series because of its special location and beautiful squares and streets.
Overnight stay in Atienza
Unfortunately, today as again the last ride on the program of this cycling vacation.
Atienza and Sigüenza are only 30 km apart, but since we want to enjoy the beautiful surroundings for as long as possible, we will make a nice detour with salt pans, rock formations and beautiful stretches of Mediterranean forest along the way. Sigüenza is a place where all of Spanish history is represented, with remnants from Celt Iberian, Roman and Moorish times. But the town is also a lively place on weekends and in the summer, with many visitors coming to stroll through the parks and along promenades and soak up the atmosphere. The choice is yours to explore the town further or spend a relaxing evening in the comfort of our castle-parador.
After breakfast there will be a transfer to Madrid airport. Participants who have chosen to extend their vacation have a transfer to the center of Madrid and continue to the accommodation they have booked themselves.
From Sigüenza’s train station you can also travel to Zaragoza, with connection to Barcelona (see renfe.com)
Fans who want to continue cycling can also combine this trip with Madrid – Valencia. From coast to coast in Spain!

General information
We are proud to present this new group tour in the beautiful north of Spain: the impressive city of Bilbao. Everywhere you look you will find imposing hills, fresh green nature and not to forget culture! The highlight, of course, is the Guggenheim Museum. We cycled on car-free roads and through beautiful scenery through the wine region of La Rioja in the Basque Country in the Ebro Valley.
La Rioja is special because of its world-famous, high quality wines, the beautiful rolling wine landscapes with historic villages and castles, and the unique combination of culture, gastronomy and natural diversity Just the transfer on day one to the starting point of your bike tour is already a great experience and you'll feast your eyes on the Sierra de la Demanda to the Castilian plateau which forms the backdrop for the first few days. Cycling really is a party here. In Logroño we end the day with a visit and tasting at Bodegas Franco Españolas; how wonderful life can be! During this cycling vacation, the Camino del Cid is the focus during the first part of this cycling adventure. The Camino del Cid is special because it is a themed route that passes through the regions where the Spanish national hero El Cid fought, and because it is a combination of history and nature. The route is signposted and crosses no fewer than eight provinces, from his birthplace of Vivar to Valencia, the city he conquered from the Moors.
Winding roads, vineyards and good cycling roads make it a true cycling feast. As icing on the cake, we spend the night in a beautiful parador after the last bike ride. Madrid is the final station of this cycling trip.
