Day to day

You can check into the hotel from 3 o’clock so you will have plenty of time to explore this beautiful area by mountain bike. You have a choice of 6 different routes. We have highlighted a few for you here.

Mountain bike route Exloo (41km)

From Odoorn, cycle along the bike path toward the mill field of Exloo. Here you leave the bike path and join Exloo’s MTB route. Along the moorland you will ride through several single tracks and past the dolmen to the 7 hills. This is an old motocross circuit that is part of the route. On this 1.2-kilometer section you can practice your steering technique for a while. Of course, you can make a few extra laps on this technical section. You will then end up on the agricultural trails behind the village of Ees, heading east on the trail. The elevation difference shows that you are on the Hondsrug here. Through a sandy slope on the Hooge Veld, you now bike back toward Exloo. Just before Exloo, you get a challenging course around an old sand excavation. From here, cycle to the Hunzebos. Here there are some nice climbs and a small downhill. The 38 kilometers are over! Another short distance back to hotel De Oringer Marke.

Overnight in Odoorn

From Odoorn, cycle along the road via Kibbelveen to the Sleen forest. If all goes well, you are now warmed up and you need to be! Indeed, immediately upon arriving at the course around swimming lake De Kibbelkoele, it is turning and turning on the winding singletracks. Enjoy the small, steep climbs and descents! The remainder of the trail runs mostly along the edge of the forest. This is to allow the wildlife in the middle all the peace and quiet. After a few kilometers, you will come across a real “mogul slope” on the route. Some drainage ditches were cleverly used to get some elevation change back into the route. This part of the route consists of a variety of wide trails where you can catch your breath and fun, technical singletracks. Regularly you look out over the wide Drenthe countryside beside you. Many other differences in elevation were created by windblown drift sand from when the area was heathland. Through much work by the local mountain biking club, The Bushbikers, the area’s potential has been put to good use. Through Odoornerveen you cycle out, over the road, back to De Oringer Marke.

Overnight in Odoorn

From Odoorn, cycle along the bike path to Klijndijk. Here leave the bike path and enter the Valtherbos. Over wider cart tracks you will arrive at a nice sandpit. Once through the sandpit, you will bike along singletracks to Haantjeduin. This is the highest hill on the Hondsrug: 26.5m above sea level. Haantjeduin is part of haantjebak, a shifting sand plain located in the Emmerdennen. In the Emmerdennen, the course is challenging. Through winding singletracks you will be surprised several times by nice short technical climbs and descents. You cycle out of the Valtherbos again after Albert Zeefat’s hiding place and pass “Eppies Bergie,” the largest burial mound in Drenthe, back in Odoorn. After a refreshing shower, this 3-day MTB package ends and you leave for home on your own.

General information

The Drentse Hondsrug is an exquisite place where you can totally indulge in rugged nature on your mountain bike. Meandering along the finest singletracks through forests and over moorland hills. The Hondsrug Drenthe offers many opportunities for both beginning and advanced mountain bikers. The Hondsrug is an area of peace and quiet where you can completely clear your head and where adrenaline rushes through your body.

The Hondsrug is an ancient natural elevation in the landscape, created during the Ice Age. Originally this was a moorland but today this area is almost entirely forested. The area was long ago the only area where you could live high and dry. So there are many traces of the past to be found. The beautiful nature with interesting historical sights lends itself perfectly to active mountain bike tours. The landscape is varied; you will find forest, heathland, fens and sand drifts. Never boring with plenty to see along the way!

200 KM OF MOUNTAINBIKE TRACKS We have put together a 3-day package for you with a choice of 3 different and very varied routes. The routes range in length from 21 km to 46 km, so you can combine to your heart's content during this 3-day MTB package. All routes begin and end at our regular base in Odoorn where the hotel is also located. The owner of the hotel is himself an avid mountain biker and will be happy to advise you, which routes are most suitable for you. During this 3-day trip you will be a guest at hotel Oringer Marke where everything is taken care of to perfection.

Are you looking for a shorter or just longer trip? It's all possible because Drenthe has as many as 200 kilometers of interconnected mountain bike tracks.

This 3-day package is tailored entirely to the mountain biker. Before you hit the road, you will join us for a full breakfast and for the road, you will be given a packed lunch. In the evening, join us for a 3-course meal. On the last day, you can check out of the hotel extra late so that you can also cruise in the morning and then go home showered and well. Now that's what we call good service!
