It is hard to fathom but in the 15th century, the Hanseatic cities in the Netherlands were the most important trade centers and Amsterdam and Rotterdam were still villages. Merchants in northern Europe formed an alliance and gave each other all kinds of trade privileges such as exemption from paying tolls. Rivers and seas were the main transport routes from salt and beer to timber and animal skins. The river IJssel was an important link between trade from the Baltic Sea and the North Sea area. On the Veluwe, Harderwijk, Elburg, Kampen and Hattem flourished due to their favorable location on the Zuiderzee.

Day to day

You travel on your own to the heart of the Veluwe: Vierhouten At the hotel there is free parking during the entire cycling vacation.
Your hotel for the next few days is an oasis of tranquility. A wonderful place to enjoy a well-deserved drink and delicious cuisine, in the midst of the Veluwe nature.

Overnight in Vierhouten

On your first bike ride of this vacation, you’ll experience one of the most unique cycling routes through the Veluwe, which winds right through the forests of the Royal Forestry Estate. The Royal Forestry Estate is part of the Loo Crown Estate and has been associated with the House of Orange-Nassau for over 300 years. This estate, with its rich cultural history, is characterized by beautiful landscapes and is part of the largest contiguous forest area in the Netherlands. The Veluwe villages of Elspeet and Vaassen are lovely places to get off the bike and take a break. From these villages, you can easily ride back into the quiet of the woods—wonderful! On the way back you will pass the imposing 16th century Cannenburgh Castle in Vaassen. The estate and the restored castle can be visited and is highly recommended. I
“The Hidden Village” was a hiding place for people in hiding in the woods of Vierhouten during World War II. You can see the rebuilt cabins here. The route then continues on unpaved forest trails where you will see the tracks of wild boar everywhere as they have roamed the earth in search of food.

Overnight in Vierhouten

You’ll cycle through the Renderklippen nature reserve. These heather-covered moraines were formed by ice and water many thousands of years ago.
The Hogendoorns Plaatse museum is located in one of the beautiful regional farmhouses around Epe, where you can learn more about the region’s history—highly recommended!
You’ll cycle through the forests of the Nunspeet Forest District to your next overnight stop in Nunspeet.
Nunspeet is a village surrounded primarily by thousands of hectares of forest. Nunspeet is also known for the many artists who have lived and worked there. As a result, there are several museums, an art market, and a delightful art trail.

Overnight in Harderwijk.

You leave Nunspeet in a northeasterly direction and cycle through a vast polder landscape, towards the river IJssel. You can’t get a more Dutch setting: dikes, polders and water.
Halfway along the route, you will arrive in the Hanseatic town of Hattem.
This picturesque town is sandwiched between the IJssel and the edge of the Veluwe and has a picturesque center where you can stroll around or enjoy a moment on one of the many terraces. This small town has been a source of inspiration for many painters for centuries. While in Hattem, you can also visit the Anton Pieck Museum.
On the way back, you’ll pass the De Dellen estate. This 19th-century estate owes its fame primarily to the renowned meteorologist Buys Ballot. He transformed the vast heathlands into a park-like estate featuring a mix of forests, tree-lined avenues, and small heath fields.
The final leg of today’s ride takes you back to Nunspeet along quiet country roads with little traffic.

Overnight in Nunspeet

Before heading down to Harderwijk, take a detour and cycle along the eastern shores of the Drontermeer; you’ll reach Kampen after about 30 km. Kampen, a Hanseatic maritime city, is home to the Kamper Kogge, a fleet of 15th-century merchant ships. There’s plenty to see and do in Kampen
, and all the sights are within walking distance. You’ll find many artisanal shops and warehouses there. Kampen is also the perfect spot for your first break of the day. After Kampen, you’ll cycle through the beautiful Reve-Abbertbos forest in the Flevopolder. It’s strange to think that this relatively young forest area was still part of the Zuiderzee just over a hundred years ago. After about 50 km, you’ll pass Elburg again. You’ll cycle the final stretch of this route along a mostly separate bike path through a vast agricultural landscape dotted with streams and ditches to your next overnight stop in Harderwijk.
Harderwijk is an old Hanseatic city. Wander through the medieval streets lined with beautiful historic buildings, such as the monumental old town hall and the picturesque Visschers huisje.
You can also join a guided city tour. The tour guide will tell you about the city’s rich history, in which the fortifications and fishing played an important role.
Enjoy a glass of wine at one of the many outdoor cafes and watch the sunset from one of the many beach pavilions on the city beach.

Overnight in Harderwijk

You can also opt for a shorter route today where you will have more time to visit the beautiful town of Elburg.
Kasteel Zwaluwenburg dating back to the 14th century is a nice place to stop off as is farm museum de Bovenstreek where you can see how people used to live.
Hanseatic city Elburg is a nice town on the Veluwe Lake with a walled historic center, ramparts and iconic city gate. The authentic botters in the harbor are silent witnesses to Elburg’s rich fishing past.
Wander through the medieval streets with beautiful historic buildings. No matter where you are in the fortified town, you’re sure to see something special. The beautifully preserved city moat and defensive walls still surround the city center. One of Elburg’s former city gates has been preserved. When you walk underneath it, you’ll step into a world full of monuments. Or relax at one of the many outdoor cafes near the harbor.
You’ll cycle the final stretch of this route along a mostly separate bike path through a vast rural landscape dotted with streams and ditches to your next overnight stop in Harderwijk.

You’ll then cycle through the Speulder and Sprielder forests. These are among the oldest and most beautiful forests in the Netherlands, known for their “dancing” ancient trees. Ferns and half-decayed tree trunks create a unique atmosphere. The springs and streams of the Leuvenum forests create a fairy-tale-like atmosphere.
The bike path cutting straight through the Beekhuizerzand, where sand drifts roam freely, is a beautiful way to conclude this diverse bike route.

Overnight in Vierhouten

Time sure flies! Unfortunately, today marks the final bike route on the itinerary, back to where you started your cycling vacation: Vierhouten.
Today you’ll cycle to the “smallest town” in the Netherlands: Staverden. There’s plenty to discover on the Staverden estate, including the Uddelaer Brewery in the coach house, where you can sample a variety of specialty beers. After Elspeet, you’ll cycle through the vast forests of the Het Loo Estate. The final stretch of this cycling vacation is stunning, and the Vierhouterbos makes for a beautiful conclusion to this ride before you reach the end of your cycling vacation: Vierhouten.

During this varied cycling vacation you will discover the rich past of this special part of the Veluwe and ride past the most beautiful medieval towns, interspersed with impressive natural areas such as vast heathlands, endless sand drifts, dense forests and characteristic Veluwe villages. You will stay overnight at three different locations, with the wooded Vierhouten as the starting and finishing point of your trip. Of course, we provide the luggage transport, so you can enjoy each stage carefree.

The vast forests and nature reserves around Vierhouten are the habitat of boars, deer, roe deer and foxes. Nature here is truly magnificent and surprisingly versatile. Chances are that you will meet the shepherd with his flock of sheep along the way. Also Kroondomein Het Loo belongs to the most beautiful forest areas of the Veluwe. Elburg is an attractive Hanseatic city with a walled historic center, old city walls and a characteristic city gate. In the harbor are beautiful authentic botters and it is a pleasure to wander through the narrow streets full of history. From Nunspeet you make a beautiful tour through the northern part of the Veluwe and visit the Hanseatic city of Hattem. Cycling through Hattem, you will immediately understand why this town on the river IJssel has attracted artists for centuries. Dutch skies, stately estates and vast forests form the perfect backdrop here. On the way to Harderwijk, you will pass the Hanseatic city of Kampen, with an enchanting city center full of ornate merchant houses and impressive facades. Harderwijk is a lively Hanseatic city with a historic city center and a rich maritime history. Picturesque streets are interspersed with atmospheric squares and cozy terraces.

Through vast heathlands and quiet forests, you will finally cycle back to Vierhouten, where this special cycling vacation began.
