One of the most beautiful cycling areas

If you are looking for a cycling vacation through a beautiful area, not too far from home, we can highly recommend this special cycling vacation. The German Eifel is located east of Belgium and Luxembourg about 2.5 hours' drive from Utrecht.

Day to day

You will travel to Aachen on your own. Arrive early to take some time to explore this city. The most famous of course is the Aachen Cathedral but this city of Charlemagne has more sights like the old city walls, some art museums and the Sacred Heart Church.

Overnight stay in Aachen

At the Aachen Rothe Erde train station, the Vennbahn begins. This former railroad was bike route of the year in 2014 and will take you to Monschau today. Almost imperceptibly, you ascend 250 meters on this ride, almost imperceptibly because the gradient of the Vennbahn is a maximum of 2%. Along the way, be sure to visit the monumental Kornelimünster. After you leave the agglomeration of Aachen, the natural beauty becomes more and more beautiful. Your final destination today is Monschau, a cozy Eifel town with quaint stores, cozy terraces and beautiful half-timbered houses.

Overnight stay in Monschau

In the morning, take time to stroll through historic Monschau. From Monschau, it first goes up on a beautiful bike path along the Rur River. Once you have reached the height of the Vennbahn, it goes gently sloping through and past the Hoge Venen nature reserve, one of the last preserved bog landscapes in Europe. Today’s route is not very long so plenty of time for a trip to Robertville, a town formerly known for its peat cutters but now, of course, because of its impressive reservoir. Then it continues to the next reservoir, that of Bütgenbach. This is where you will spend the night today.

Overnight stay in Bütgenbach

Yesterday you left the Vennbahn behind you and followed the RAVeL45a for the last stretch to Bütgenbach. Today this beautiful bike path will lead you through Büllingen towards the German border at Losheimergraben. Almost imperceptibly you pass this border and from this border you cycle on the Kylltalradweg. ‘ This bike path winds you mostly downhill along the little river Kyll. Be sure to visit the town of Kronenburg today with its beautiful historic center and ruins above. Through other nice towns such as Stadtkyll and Jünkerath you will continue to the mineral water town of Gerolstein.

Overnight stay in Gerolstein

From the mineral water of Gerolstein, it’s on to the beer of Bitburg today. That’s a great prospect! Along the way, you will pass through small, idyllic towns like Birresborn, Mürlenbach, Densborn and Kyllburg. Today’s stage has short steep climbs of about 100 – 300 meters in length and long comfortable descents. Beyond Kyllburg, your biggest challenge awaits: a 2.5 km climb with hefty gradients. The equally steep descent at the end of this climb is a welcome reward. Do you not like this piece? No problem, in Kylburg you can catch the train to Erdorf, the town at the end of the descent. Both stations are on the route and this train ride makes the route 6 km shorter. From Erdorf, continue your route again to the town known for Bitburger beer. So a delicious beer is a nice reward for this bike ride.

Overnight stay in Bitburg

From Bitburg, start with a lovely long descent to the Kyll and soon follow the bike path along the river. You will again cycle through a varied environment; open landscapes with beautiful vistas, on narrow cycle paths with water and forest alongside you and through picturesque villages. The Kyll and the railroad always remain nearby. Those who leave early still have plenty of time to explore Trier. This city is still full of Roman influences with the Porta Nigra, the amphitheater, the terhmen and the Basilica. The Kyll flows into the Moselle here so for those who don’t want to go home yet, there are still plenty of options.

Overnight stay in Trier

After breakfast, the package ends. You have the option of booking an additional transfer. In that case you will be picked up by a cab during the morning which will take you and your bikes back to the starting hotel in Aachen.

General information

If you are looking for a cycling vacation through a beautiful area, not too far from home, we can highly recommend this special cycling vacation. The German Eifel is located east of Belgium and Luxembourg about 2.5 hours' drive from Utrecht.

When most cyclists think of the Eifel, they think of tough climbs through a hilly area. However, we have put together a cycling vacation for you where you can enjoy all the wonderful things this area has to offer without having to exert yourself too much. So you have plenty of time along the way to enjoy the beautiful views, historical sights, quaint towns and not to forget the beautiful nature. The Eifel is originally a volcanic area and famous for its many mineral springs. Iron was mined in this area well before the era. The Eifel is also known for its many sulfurous hot springs and spas. The typical Eifel towns combined with beautiful bike trails and natural parks make the German Eifel a special cycling destination!

Old rail lines as bike lanes
You begin your cycling vacation in the historic cathedral city of Aachen. An old railroad that is no longer used has been converted into a bike path so you can enjoy the area car-free. An additional advantage of this Vennbahn is the very low gradient so that nowhere does it get really tough along the way. You bike through the border area with Belgium to Monschau and after Bütgenbach you cross the German border again and the Vennbahn turns into another bike path through the beautiful Nature Park The High Fens.

Via the Kylltalradweg, reach Gerolstein, the spring water town in the Eifel. On the way to Bitburg, the route gradually becomes more difficult with some short climbs with an outlier of 2.5 km. No appetite for this climbing work? No problem, you can also travel by train for this tricky bit. A long descent will take you to Trier, the end point of this cycling vacation.
