Hiking in the land of Bartje!

Vincent van Gogh already wrote it when he stayed in the province of Drenthe; the landscape of Drenthe is particularly picturesque and extraordinarily varied and a fantastic environment for hiking! During this 5-day hiking vacation, you will hike along the oldest long-distance trail in the Netherlands: the Drenthe trail.

Day to day

After the welcome drink at the hotel, it is time to explore the surroundings of Odoorn. Through the Duck Pit, hike on to the Noorder Es also called the Papenveld. These were the fields of the pastor and later the pastor. Experience a piece of history, pass contours of hunebed D34 and pause at “Eppies Bargie,” an ancient high burial mound located in the northern fields of Odoorn. The walk ends again at the hotel in Odoorn.

Today the first stage of the Drenthepad is on the program .Through the south field of Odoorn you walk towards the nature reserve the Schaangedennen and the Hunzebos; a whimsical, varied forest with many historical features from the ice age. Brinkdorp Valthe is known for its centuries-old Saxon farms on the old brink and the famous apple pie of baker Kuipers! In the Valhterbos are many burial mounds and several dolmens. You pass the hiding place from World War II where Albertus Zefat, hid Jewish people from the German occupiers.

The forest of Emmerdennen is an oasis of tranquility. It is a beautiful forest with ancient sand dunes. Giant pines here seem to stand on legs. The wind blew away the sand around their roots. You will walk out of the forest toward Emmen, where today’s hike ends.

You will hike past several dolmens such as the dolmens in Bronneger. Walking through the village of Drouwen, you can visit Exposition Farm Versteend Leven. Gasselte is a village located on the Hondsrug, amidst the Drenthe state forests and moorlands. It is mainly the unspoiledness, the vast forests, heathland, sand drifts and cultural landscapes that makes Gasselte so special. The long route continues toward Gieten via the Brummeler trail. This beautiful trail, enclosed by lush greenery, runs along a former railroad track and was dug right through the Hondsrug to minimize elevation changes for train traffic. In the village of Gieten you will find several beautiful old farms and is also the end point of this walk.

Unfortunately, today is already the last day of this hiking vacation the hiking vacation. During this route you walk through forests and moors past a hill with observation tower: Pool Heights. This hill is also popularly called the Blood Mountain of Exloo. Also located at the same spot is a teahouse, a nice place for a stop. Along the way you will see the sheep park, where the animals move freely in nature. A nice conclusion to the hiking vacation before you return home on your own. Of course, you can also choose to book another day so you can enjoy the Drenthe countryside even longer.

General information

Vincent van Gogh already wrote it when he stayed in the province of Drenthe; the landscape of Drenthe is particularly picturesque and extraordinarily varied and a fantastic environment for hiking! During this 5-day hiking vacation, you will hike along the oldest long-distance trail in the Netherlands: the Drenthe trail.

MOORS, SAND DRIFTS AND SHEEP HERDS.

This trail with a total length of 324 kilometers, has exactly what every hiker is looking for: peace, space and scenic beauty. You will hike 3 beautiful stages of this trail across the Hondsrug during this vacation. This elongated sand ridge has been under UNESCO protection for 5 years and is officially a "Geopark" . The hiking trail passes through the many beautiful natural areas and brink villages in Drenthe. Along the way you will pass heathlands, sand drifts, sheep herds and, of course, the famous dolmens of Drenthe.

During this walking vacation, you will be introduced to all the beauty that Drenthe has to offer, which is more than just dolmens

In addition to the 3 stages of the Drenthe trail, we have set out a number of shorter walks for you so that you can also enjoy all the beauty Drenthe has to offer on arrival and departure days. The length of both walks are 10-12 km. The length of the Drenthe trail stages are 15-18 km.

The base for this hiking vacation is a cozy hotel with large outdoor terraces in Odoorn, in the middle of the Hondsrug. A number of walks depart from the hotel. For the stages where this is not the case, take the bus that stops/departs in front of the hotel. At the end of the hike, take the bus back to the hotel in Odoorn.

Have you also started to feel like it? So put on the hiking boots!
