Vast forests , moors and sand drifts
The Veluwe is the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands, located in the province of Gelderland, and is known for its varied landscape of forests, heaths, shifting sands and fens. The area was created by ice age moraines, which creates a hilly terrain, and is an important habitat for many plant and animal species, such as red deer, wild boar and foxes.

Day to day
After arriving at the hotel in Vierhouten, it is immediately time to lace up the hiking boots. The first route of this walking vacation is an immediate hit. Strolling through the woods and moors of National Park Hoge Veluwe in an oasis of tranquility. In August and September, the moors turn purple and lead to impressive vistas. The rolling terrain of the Tongeren heath covers some 220 hectares. The flatter Wisselse moor about 50 hectares and the combination of dry and wet parts, provide a rare flora and fauna. This is the habitat of red deer, roe deer , wild boar and bird species such as the hawk and buzzard. You also walk along a replica of the Hidden Village where during the 2nd World War Jews and resistance fighters hid from the German enemy: a unique piece of history, hidden in nature. Back in Vierhouten you can enjoy the first walk on the terrace. In the evening a delicious dinner is waiting for you.
From the hotel, the walk leads you through the Vierhouterbos with its ancient trees to the Noorderheide. In this area, harbor baron D.G. van Beuningen placed pyramids just before World War II and constructed water works consisting of concrete streams and ponds. In some places you can see rooting tracks of wild boar along the paths. The village of Elspeet is a nice break spot for lunch. After Elspeet, the walk continues over the vast Elspeetse Heide with elevation changes that provide beautiful views. The Elspeetse Heide is special because of the combination of a vast, rolling moorland with forests, the presence of historic burial mounds and a replica of a burial mound with a cross-section showing the archaeological structure. The area has a rich history as a military training ground and today it is again grazed by sheep herds, thus preserving the heathland.
The route is for the most part unpaved: wider dirt paths are interspersed with surprising one-man paths. The walk ends again at the hotel in Vierhouten.
Today we hike to the next overnight location in Nunspeet for the next 2 nights.
During the first part of the hike the route goes over the Westeindsche Heide. This heathland is significantly smaller than the Elspeetse Heide where we hiked yesterday, but is at least as beautiful. This heath is special because of the drifting sand, which creates a unique landscape and attracts rare species of birds such as the woodlark. In short, an impressive sight.
The heath here is also more hilly compared to other heathlands. At the end of the trail you will pass a place surrounded by rhododendron bushes. This is where the Round House used to stand. This was a round country house with extensive gardens and ponds in the Zandenbos near Nunspeet was built in 1906 by an engineer and was shaped like a Roman arena. The building was demolished in 1967 but the site is a clearing in the forest where traces of it can still be found.
Your accommodation for the next 2 days is located on the outskirts of Nunspeet.
You have a choice of 2 different routes today. Can’t choose? No problem because both routes are in sync for the first part and you only have to decide after 8 km. Today you will walk through the Hulshorsterzand: a vast sand drift area managed by Natuurmonumenten and they do everything they can to keep this area open for rare plants and animals. To survive in this area you have to be able to cope with temperature differences between day and night of up to 40 degrees!
The long route makes another loop through the Hierdense Poort. This area will be transformed and arranged in the coming years into a large contiguous nature reserve so that it forms a “green” link between the “dry” Veluwe on the one hand and the “wet” rivers and lakes on the other hand.
Through forest paths you walk back towards Nunspeet and reach the hotel.
Unfortunately, today is already the last day of this hiking vacation the hiking vacation. You can again choose from 2 different distances today. After about 7 km, the route splits. During this route you walk through forests and over moors. The long route makes another loop along a small, open moorland surrounded by pine and oak forests, before you walk back into Vierhouten . On the terrace of the hotel it is pleasant to relax and also a nice conclusion of the walking vacation before you leave for home again. Of course you can also choose to book another day so you can enjoy the beautiful Veluwe even longer.
