Ancient landscape created in the ice age

This cycling vacation takes you through one of the oldest landscapes in the Netherlands. Formed during the Ice Age when glaciers raised the hills into ramparts. Later, the Rhine and Meuse rivers found their way to the North Sea from here, forming the Dutch Delta. Because the area is above sea level, settlement by hunting peoples took place here as early as the third century. Their burial mounds are still recognizable in the country. Later, the border of the Roman Empire, the Limes, ran through this area. Nijmegen was a major Roman settlement, making it one of the oldest places in the Netherlands. The moraines and rivers also formed natural boundaries and thus often became a battleground of war and destruction.

A Bridge Too Far

The area became world famous for the film "A Bridge Too Far," which told the story of Operation Market Garden: the Airborne air landings and fighting in September 1944. World War II left deep scars. During Operation Market Garden, the Allies tried to bring the German army to its knees with large-scale air landings at Arnhem and Nijmegen, thus shortening the war. The operation largely failed and later led to the harsh famine in large parts of the Netherlands.

Cycling past visible memories: 75th anniversary of liberation of the Netherlands

Many of these historical events have left visible memories. Museums and listening spots along the way tell the story of the long road to freedom. At the same time, the routes take you through a variety of unusual and beautiful landscapes.

The cycling routes are between 37 and 55 km long and are easy to cycle using so-called junctions. Signs indicate connecting nodes. The cycling routes are also available in GPX format.

You can choose a rental bike, or you can use your own.

Two different overnight locations

During your cycling vacation, you will stay in luxury 4-star hotels in two different locations, in Berg en Dal and Wageningen. You will start the trip in Berg en Dal, south of Nijmegen, for the first bike rides. During the second part of your trip, you will cycle to the next hotel in Wageningen where your luggage will be waiting for you upon arrival. From the hotel in Wageningen, cycle the remaining routes of your cycling vacation.

The journey in a nutshell

During the cycling routes in the Berg en Dal area, you will be introduced to a wide variety of landscapes, such as the river landscapes of Maas and Niers and the lateral wall landscape near Groesbeek. The bicycle routes pass numerous historic sites, monuments and listening spots. A bike path leads you along an old railroad line to the German town of Kleve on the edge of the imposing Reichswald Forest, a historic site because of the Airborne airborne landings.

You will cross the famous bridge of Nijmegen and cycle over dikes and typical Dutch polder landscapes through the Betuwe. The hotel in Wageningen is located on a moraine overlooking the Lower Rhine River. During the second part of the trip, the cycling routes will visit Arnhem, Oosterbeek and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Park De Hoge Veluwe, among other places.

Travel period

This particular cycling vacation can be booked from March through November. You can start on Thursday or Friday, regardless of the desired trip length of 5 or 7 days.

5-day cycling trip

Day 1

Arrival.
After arriving at the hotel in Berg en Dal, you can immediately explore the area. The hotel is located in a wooded area and within walking distance of the pleasant village of Beek and the Africa Museum. Near the hotel also begins a beautiful hiking trail: the N-70. Of course, you can also get out and about by bicycle.

Day 2

Liberation Route or Reichswaldroute (50 km / 50 km)
You have a choice of 2 different cycling routes today.

On the Liberation Route you will become acquainted with places such as Groesbeek and Gennep and cycle through a varied river landscape of the Maas and Niers rivers with visible reminders of the Allied advance in various places.

The Reichswald Route takes you through a piece of Germany and you will cycle along a Via Verde of the Low Countries to the German border town of Kleve and you will pass the largest British war cemetery in Europe: the beautifully landscaped Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.

Day 3

Berg en Dal-Wageningen (37 km)
Today's route takes you to the next overnight location in Wageningen. You will cycle over the famous bridge near Nijmegen along the Waal River and over dikes and through the Betuwe River towards Wageningen. The ferry will take you across the Lower Rhine. Hotel De Wereld is a nice location for lunch. You can also view the capitulation hall here where the terms of capitulation were agreed with the German forces on May 5, 1945.

Day 4

Airborne route or Hoge Veluwe route (40 km / 55 km)

You will again have a choice of 2 different bike routes today. The Airborne route takes you over the dikes south of the Lower Rhine towards Arnhem and cycles over the famous John Frost Bridge. This bridge has been the setting of many a movie, including the film "A Bridge Too Far. After Arnhem, the route continues to Oosterbeek. Hotel Hartenstein served as headquarters of the British military times in 1944 and is inextricably linked to the famous Battle of Arnhem and now serves as Airborne Museum Hartenstein and is well worth a visit.

You can also choose a beautiful drive through the National Park De Hoge Veluwe and visit the Kröller Müller museum. This route also takes you across the Ginkel Heath: scene of the largest airborne operation in history in September 1944.

Overnight in Wageningen

Day 5

Wageningen-Berg en Dal (45 km) and departure
This cycling vacation concludes with a route through the Betuwe back to the starting point in Berg en Dal with numerous reminders of the last phase of the occupation of the Netherlands. You will cycle along the Marigold Path to the impressive Doorneburg Castle. The marigold symbolizes the suffering of wartime civilians. The ferry will take you across the river and cycle back to the hotel in Berg en Dal via Beek.

Day 1

Halfway along the route is Gennep. Here you can visit the Martinus Tower Visitor Center. Just before Groesbeek, you will bike over a moraine to the historic landing sites of the American paratroopers in September 1944.

Day 3

Reichswald route (50km)

You will take a trip across the German border. A "Via Verde of the Low Countries": a bike path along an old railroad line leads to the German border town of Kleve. Along the way you will pass the largest British field of honor in Europe; the beautiful Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.

A visit to the completely renovated Freedom Museum near Groesbeek is highly recommended.

Day 4

Berg en Dal -Wageningen (37km)

Today's route takes you to the next overnight location in Wageningen. You will cycle over the famous bridge near Nijmegen along the Waal River and over dikes and through the Betuwe River towards Wageningen. The ferry will take you across the Lower Rhine. Hotel De Wereld is a nice location for lunch. You can also view the capitulation hall here where the terms of capitulation were agreed with the German forces on May 5, 1945.

Airborne route (40km)

During the first part of today's bike route, you will cycle through a typical Dutch landscape over dikes and polders along the southern bank of the Lower Rhine to Arnhem, passing the John Frost Bridge. This bridge served as the setting for several films, including "A Bridge Too Far. After Arnhem, the route continues to Oosterbeek. Hotel Hartensteinis inextricably linked to the calculated Battle of Arnhem and now serves as Airborne Museum Hartenstein and is well worth a visit.

Day 6

Hoge Veluwe route (55km)

A beautiful bicycle route through the Hoge Veluwe National Park. In the park you can visit the Kröller- Müller Museum. The second part of this route takes you across the Ginkelse Heide near Ede. It is hard to imagine that in September 1944 this beautiful natural area was the scene of the largest airborne operation in history.

Day 7

Wageningen-Berg en Dal (45km)

This cycling vacation concludes with a route through the Betuwe back to the starting point in Berg en Dal with numerous reminders of the last phase of the occupation of the Netherlands. You will cycle along the Marigold Path to the impressive Doorneburg Castle. The marigold symbolizes the suffering of wartime civilians. The ferry will take you across the river and cycle via Beek back to the hotel in Berg en Dal where you will leave for home after collecting your luggage
