Walking and living in Turkey!
Hiking in the mountains and sleeping under the stars.
The guided group walking vacation begins in Turkey, in the town of Fethiye. Fethiye is a very convenient location for a wonderful walking vacation. The hikes are on unpaved trails, interspersed with some steeper sections.
Turkey's hiking trails contain a mix of culture, nature and, of course, the ancient sites in the area are not missing.
The permanent base in Fethiye is a cozy family hotel, run by a Turkish/Belgian family, located a stone's throw from the lively promenade. You will stay the first 4 days in the hotel in Fethiye and the last 3 days in an authentically built stone house in Yakaköy. This house also has the luxury of a pool and is located on a mountainside with many roof terraces. Sleeping outside under the stars is recommended!
During the vacations, there is extensive cooking with local ingredients. You will certainly be spoiled with typical Turkish dishes.
On the3rd day, a rest day is scheduled before the next hikes continue.
Hiking in Fethiye (Turkey)
Located in southwestern Turkey, Fethiye is right by the sea. The surroundings of this town have much to offer the hiker: flora, fauna, culture, beach, sea and a friendly population. Fethiye is surrounded by substantial mountains and, unlike many other coastal towns, has not yet been overrun by tourists. It is a traditional working town full of activity, a harbor with fishing boats and a luxury marina. The beating heart of Fethiye is Paspartur, with narrow streets lined with stores and restaurants.
Ancient sights are just steps away. The rich historical past of this area is reflected everywhere in the streets.
Hikes highlighted
Walk Fethiye-Afkule
This is one of the most challenging and interesting hikes on this peninsula. This hike initially takes us to Afkule, where a monastery is carved out of the rocks. We then leave Afkule northward to Hacbeli. The walk to the north gives you the most beautiful views of Fethiye Bay. Along the way, we will encounter ancient sights, from various periods of history, such as the children's graves from the Lycian period and churches from the Byzantine period. Next, we descend to Belen.
Walking time: approximately 7 hours
Overnight: Fethiye (hotel)
Hike Kelebekler-Kabak
We start in Faralya, a sprawling village on the ridge next to the Butterfly and Kabak valleys. The inhabitants of Faralya and the neighboring village of Kabak live mainly from honey cultivation and agriculture. The coast here is still quite pristine. Kabak is the next bay after the butterfly valley (Kelebek vadisi) and is surrounded by impressive mountains. Arriving in the village of Kabak, we descend steeply along a wooded path. Arriving at the bay, enthusiasts can swim. Along the way, we see impressive vistas including Kabak beach.
Walking time: approximately 5 hours
Overnight: Fethiye (hotel)
Walk Catak
We walk between fields and small farms into the farmland. On this route, as we climb up, we see farmers turning into half nomads. These farmers move high into the mountains during the summer and do not return to their village until winter. We will visit one of these "nomad families" and talk about their daily life and have a glass of tea together. We have lunch along the way at a beautiful spot in the middle of the fields. In this part of Turkey, due to the mild climate, multiple harvests of vegetables per year are quite common. A variety of fruits and vegetables, and even cotton, are grown. Spring is particularly beautiful because of the fruit blossoms and almond trees. Beginning in September, harvests begin, such as pomegranates and olives.
Walking time: approximately 5 hours
Overnight: Yakaköy (mountain house)
Tartişik-Akinlar hike
This hike starts from the village. First we pass small houses and many different cultivated fields. We then get closer to the forest and walk past large apple orchards. Continuing up through pine forests that, as we go higher, change to cedar and juniper trees. We will be above 1,000 meters. The view is immense. We have views of the beautiful green valleys and, in clear weather, even two seas. Along the way we will have a picnic. Furthermore, we may have to maneuver through the occasional flock of sheep or goats. Before they move on with the shepherd while tinkling their bells.
Walking time: approximately 6 hours
Overnight: Yakaköy (mountain house)
Walk Gökpinar
Over the flanks of the mountain range we walk to Arsaköy. The route always takes us gradually alternating up and down. Arsaköy is where many apples, pomegranates and olives come from. We visit a local farmer and see what he is working on at the time. Perhaps we can lend a hand harvesting anise, pomegranate, tomatoes or cotton, among others. We then continue walking through a fragrant pine forest to reach Arsaköy. Along the way, we encounter the Lycian tombs of Arsada. In a typical Turkish cafe in Arsa, we drink tea.
Walking time: approximately 6 hours
Overnight: Yakaköy (mountain house)
