5-day cycling vacation Haspengouw

The southern region of Limburg, Haspengouw, is known as a fruit and blossom region. Indeed, the mainly rolling landscape lends itself particularly well to fruit growing and viticulture. This Belgian Betuwe is a wonderful cycling environment for making beautiful bike rides through this still rather unknown region. The most beautiful period is spring when this area is in full bloom.

The first 2 days you will get to know Maastricht, one of the nicest cities in the Netherlands with perhaps the most beautiful square: the Vrijthof. During the route through the Maas valley you will pass, among other things, the Sint Pietersberg with an extensive underground tunnel system. On the 3rd day you will cycle to the next overnight location in Sint-Truiden and pass a nice attraction on the way near Borgloon: experience center the Stroopfabriek; a beautiful display about the path taken from budding fruit to its processing into delicious regional products such as the Loon syrup.

The city of Sint-Truiden has no less than 250 protected monuments. From atop the old abbey tower, you get a magnificent view of the region as a gift.After a tasty ride around Sint-Truiden past breweries and vineyards. On the last day, you cycle through Tongeren. On the Grand Place you will be proudly awaited by Ambiorix, the man who outsmarted Caesar. You finish your cycling vacation where you started, in Kanne. You can also extend your cycling vacation with an overnight stay in the hotel so that you can start your return journey the next day refreshed and ready to go.

Day 1

Arrival in Kanne. Around Maastricht (50km)

Be sure to arrive on time at your first overnight location because it is immediately time to get acquainted with Maastricht by bike. During this route you will cycle through the heart of Maastricht, among other places; one of the most pleasant cities in the Netherlands. The route will also take you past several castles such as Huis Blankenberg. This castle was built around 1825 on the foundations of a medieval fortress in the shape of a lighthouse. The Vrijthof in Maastricht is an ideal place to pause and enjoy this beautiful city.

Day 2

Meuse Valley Route (64km)

During today's route, you will cycle mostly along the Meuse River between Maastricht and Maasmechelen. You have only just started this ride or you will pass the Sint Pietersberg with an extensive underground corridor system. Most of the corridors were excavated for the ENCI limestone quarry. The quarries of the Zonneberg were only excavated in the 19th and were used as shelters for the people of Maastricht during the Second World War. Via the Servaas Bridge, you will reach the eastern bank of the Meuse and the route continues to Borgharen. Borgharen is located between the Juliana Canal and River Meuse, where it forms the border between the Netherlands and Belgium.

Day 3

Kanne – Sint-Truiden (63km)

After breakfast it is time to pack your bags and cycle to your next accommodation for the next 2 days. Today you cycle in a westerly direction through the hilly Haspengouw region with charming villages along the way. A nice sight to see near Borgloon is experience center the Stroopfabriek a beautiful display about the journey from budding fruit to its processing into delicious regional products such as the Loonse stroop. The route ends in the old town of Sint-Truiden and also the capital of Haspengouw. A beautiful town whose belfry on the Grote Markt and the Sint-Agnesbegijnhof are on the Unesco World Heritage List.

Day 4

Vineyards and breweries route (64km)

We warn you in advance: the route has very many tasty dismounts. If you cycle here around April, as a bonus you will also be presented with a beautiful white landscape from the beautiful spring blossoms. On the way you will cycle through this hilly area on car-free roads past castles, churches, idyllic church villages, breweries and distilleries and pass no less than four wine estates. In the heart of the Truien regional village of Wilderen, amidst extensive fruit orchards, you will find a contemporary brewery and distillery. In this café with a large terrace you can discover home-brewed beers, whiskey and jenevers
In the castle village of Kerkom you will find the artisanal Kerkom Brewery. Here you can enjoy home-brewed Brink beers.

Overnight stay in Sint-Truiden

Day 5

Sint-Truiden-Tongeren-Kanne (53km)

After breakfast it is unfortunately already time for the last ride of this cycling vacation. Today you will cycle to the first and oldest city of Belgium: Tongeren. This city breathes history. From the Roman city walls that bear witness to Roman rule to the Gothic basilica and the Beguinage, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tongeren is also the source of the small river Jeker, which flows to Maastricht to flow into the Meuse. You end the cycling vacation where you started it, at the hotel in Kanne.
