The Rhine and the Romans have been inseparable since ancient times. Rivers such as the Rhine and Danube, formed the natural northern border (limes) of the Roman Empire around 2,000 years ago and also provided natural protection from invaders. The Limes Street

was an important trade route between Nijmegen and Xanten. The Romans have disappeared but the Limes Road is still there .

How fun would it be to visit by bicycle the places where the Romans used to leave their mark on the environment and culture so much. Good news: we have put together a wonderful cycling trip for you so you can experience all this beauty in this cross-border cycling vacation in the Netherlands and Germany.

During this cycling vacation, you will not only cycle past historical and scenic sights, but also past castles, rivers and through beautiful nature on quiet roads and bike paths. A fantastic journey of discovery by bicycle!

The journey in a nutshell.

You will travel on your own to the starting point in Berg en Dal. The cycling vacation begins with a visit to the oldest city in the Netherlands, Nijmegen and the historic center of Cuijk. Through the border town of Kleve, you cycle into Germany and the route takes you past the old town of Kalkar. The unusual stepped gable houses make Kalkar an unmistakable place on the Lower Rhine.

Visit the idyllic town of Xanten, with its 2000-year history. The LVR-RömerMuseum near Xanten, built on the Roman foundations of the monumental entrance hall, provides a unique insight into life in ancient times. After this, the five-day bicycle tour leads you along the banks of the Rhine back to Berg en Dal.

When you bike the 7-day trip you will arrive at the Hanseatic city of Wesel where the Rhine and Lippe rivers meet and follow the Lippe River. Nature reserve Hohe Mark- Westmünsterland is one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany with a wide variety of landscapes.
At Rees, the oldest German town on the lower Rhine , a ferry will take you back across the river. On the last ride of your cycling vacation, you will cycle back via the southern banks of the Rhine to the place where you started your cycling trip: Berg en Dal

Day 1

Arrival in Berg and Dal. Gelderse poort-Nijmegen (36km)
You will travel on your own to the starting point of your cycling vacation in Berg en Dal. The hotel is located in a wooded area. If you arrive on time today, you can set out immediately for a relatively short bike ride. You cycle through a varied landscape towards the Gelderse Poort nature reserve with several nice places for a coffee stop. Then the route goes to Nijmegen, the oldest in the Netherlands. You can visit Museum Valkhof here.

The museum has the largest collection of Roman utensils. You will then cycle back to the hotel in Berg en Dal.

Day 2

Berg en Dal-Cuijk-Berg en Dal (55km)

You cycle through a through the woods to the fens area the Hatertse- and Overasseltse Vennen. This vast nature reserve consists of about 20 beautiful fens and is surrounded by a mix of river dune, heathland and woodland.

The Buitenmuseum Cuijk introduces you to Cuijk's rich Roman past. At Cuijk, cross the Meuse River by ferry at the site where remains of a Roman bridge across this river have been found.

Teahouse Milsbeek is a nice place for coffee with something tasty. Through the Mokerheide the route goes back again, towards Groesbeek. An old railroad now serves as a bike path for the final stretch, back to your hotel in Berg en Dal.

Day 3

Berg en Dal-Kalkar (56km)
Today you will cycle across the border, to your overnight location in Germany. Less than a km after leaving the hotel in Berg en Dal, you cycle past remnants of the only Roman aqueduct found in the Netherlands. The bike path lies along an old railroad line to the German old border town of Kleve. At the Kranenburg train station, you can take a break from the route to view the romantic streets in the historic center of Kranenburg.

Kleve is an excellent place for lunch or coffee stop and there is plenty to see such as the famous Swan Castle from the 11th century.

You will cycle a stretch through beautiful forests over worn hollow roads to Bedburg-Hau and you can visit Moyland Castle with a large collection of modern art and one of Germany's most beautiful gardens.

Kalkar's old market square is an excellent place for a drink before you cycle the last bit to your hotel.

Day 4

Kalkar-Xanten-Kalkar ( 42km)
A railroad line converted into a bike path, takes you to the pilgrimage site of Marienbaum. You will then cycle along the south bank of the Rhine through a wetland area to the medieval town of Xanten. In ancient times, one of the largest settlements in the Germanic provinces of the Roman Empire was located here.

The Xanten Archaeological Park is impressive: a mix of constructed buildings and original remains of this fortified city. The Alte Markt in Xanten's old town has many terraces and is an ideal place for lunch.

Day 5

Kalkar – Berg en Dal (61 km)

During the last leg of your cycling vacation, you will cycle back through the southern banks of the Rhine, heading back towards the Netherlands. The route takes you through the small villages and the beautiful nature reserve Düffel, Kellener Altrhein und Flussmarschen. In the distance, you can already see the contours of the lateral moraine near Ubbergen. After brook follows a final short climb, back to the hotel in Berg en Dal.

Upon arrival at the hotel in Berg en Dal, this cycling package ends. You can, of course, book an extra night in Berg en Dal.

The bike path lies along an old railroad line to the German old border town of Kleve. At the Kranenburg train station, you can take a break from the route to view the romantic streets in the historic center of Kranenburg.

Kleve is an excellent place for lunch or coffee stop and there is plenty to see such as the famous Swan Castle from the 11th century.

You will cycle a stretch through beautiful forests over worn hollow roads to Bedburg-Hau and you can visit Moyland Castle with a large collection of modern art and one of Germany's most beautiful gardens.

Kalkar's old market square is an excellent place for a drink before you cycle the last bit to your hotel.

Day 4

Kalkar-Xanten-Wesel (41km-53km)
A railroad line converted into a bike path, takes you to the pilgrimage site of Marienbaum. You will then cycle along the south bank of the Rhine through a wetland area to the medieval town of Xanten. In ancient times, one of the largest settlements in the Germanic provinces of the Roman Empire was located here.

The Xanten Archaeological Park is impressive: a mix of constructed buildings and original remains of this fortified city. The Alte Markt in Xanten's old town has many terraces and is an ideal place for lunch.

You continue your route through the Bislicher Insel. This impressive nature reserve is an important bird sanctuary. On the horizon, you can already see Wesel. During the longest route, you'll cycle another bit along the Lippe River. This river meets the Rhine at Wesel and is also the longest river in North Rhine Westphalia.

Day 5

Round trip Wesel (51km-69km)
Today you again have the choice of 2 different cycling routes. You follow a beautiful bike path along the "German line" a former railroad connection between Boxtel and Wesel. The route was part of the fastest connection between London- Berlin-Saint Petersburg and was used by diplomats and royalty. It is clear to see that this railroad line has not been used for a long time: the trees grow between the rails.

You will cycle through the beautiful Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland nature reserve with circling birds of prey and changing landscapes. On the way back you will pass the Diersford Castle complex, in the middle of the Diersford Nature Reserve. This castle dates from 1432 with accompanying church in rococo style.

A bike path atop the dike with views of the floodplain and the Rhine, takes you back to the hotel on the Rhine promenade.

Day 6

Wesel-Kalkar (41km-59km)
The first part of the route you will cycle along the northern side of the Rhine on bicycle paths on top of the dike to Bislich. At Bislich, you can enjoy the terrace overlooking the Rhine at the Fähr Haus on the dike for an early coffee break. The medieval town of Rees, is the oldest German town on the lower Rhine. This picturesque town is a feast for the eyes and truly still looks like it did in the late Middle Ages, complete with ramparts, city walls and watchtowers and is known as one of the most beautiful German Rhine promenades. Rees is also a prime spot for lunch.

If you chose the short route, the ferry at Rees will take you across the Rhine and you will cycle back to the hotel in Kalkar via the southern banks.

The long route continues on the northern side of the river and crosses the Rhine at the old fishing town of Grieth for the final stretch, to the hotel in kalkar.

Day 7

Kalkar-Berg en Dal (61km)
During the last stage of your cycling vacation, you will cycle back through the southern banks of the Rhine, heading towards the Netherlands. The route takes you through the small villages and the beautiful nature reserve Düffel, Kellener Altrhein und Flussmarschen. In the distance, you can already see the contours of the lateral moraine near Ubbergen. After brook follows a final short climb, back to the hotel in Berg en Dal.

After arriving at the hotel, your cycling vacation ends and you will depart for home on your own
