The 14-day bicycle tour of northern Macedonia and northern Greece begins in the town of Ohrid, also called the "Pearl of the Balkans. The first 4 days you will cycle through northern Macedonia in a southeastern direction to the border with Greece. On the 3rd day you will spend the night at the 700-year-old monastery of Sveti Naum. The cycling routes go through Ohrid and Prespa lakes to the foothills of Pelister National Park. Just before the border with Greece, you will pass the historic town of Bitola. During Ottoman rule, Bitola was the trading city of the Balkans.

The 1st overnight location in Greece is the town of Florina, located at the foothills of the Pelister Mountains. On the way to the lake area at Agios Panteleimon, you will pass one of the 4 best wine regions in the world. On the way to Kastoria, the route passes several natural areas with rare bird species.

During the rest day in Kastoria, it is great to relax on the many terraces on the promenade. The route then continues south through sleepy villages and a beautiful natural area to the old trading town of Grevena. Grevena is located in the middle of nature and surrounded by rivers, waterfalls and an ancient forest.

The last part of the cycling trip continues south to the region of Thessaly through the valley of the Pinios River, to Kalambaka, located at the foot of Meteora. Meteora, one of the most extraordinary monuments in the world and also the highlight of this cycling trip. The unique and impressive rock formations with ancient monasteries on top make it a truly surreal spectacle.

This cycling vacation concludes with a visit to the Greek port city of Thessaloniki, named after Alexander the Great's sister. Thessaloniki has many historical monuments, as well as Aristotle Square with many terraces, not to mention the Ladadika neighborhood with an array of traditional restaurants.

Southwestern northern Macedonia and northern Greece

Until the early 20th century, Macedonia was part of the Ottoman Empire. After the various Balkan wars, large parts of Macedonia were incorporated by the Serbs, Bulgarians and Greeks. The Greek district of "Macedonia" is a district that stretches across northern Greece and borders Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north. Today, the Greek district of Macedonia is home to some 2.5 million residents who are Greek and at the same time Macedonian (which means "great man" in Greek). Macedonia was part of the former Yugoslavia and has been independent since 1991. The Republic of Macedonia has about two million inhabitants, most of whom live in the capital Skopje. The population consists mostly of ethnic Macedonians (65%), ethnic Albanians (25%) and about 4% are of Turkish origin.

Macedonia is officially called the Republic of Northern Macedonia as of February 2019. The name Northern Macedonia was a compromise in a years-long struggle with Greece. That country insisted on a new name because a province in northern Greece is also called Macedonia.

Northern Macedonia itself and the district of Macedonia in northern Greece are both great "unknowns" when it comes to cycling. Strange when you consider that these areas contain all the ingredients for a great cycling vacation! Beautiful cycling areas with rich culture and history, good roads, unspoiled nature and warm-hearted people. In short, an absolute must to explore these areas by bicycle.

Day 1

Arrival.

Upon arrival there is an approximately 15-minute transfer to the first hotel in Ohrid. In and around Ohrid there is plenty to do. Ohrid is a true open-air museum with beautiful old churches and a maze of narrow streets must be seen. A boat ride on one of the oldest lakes in the world is also highly recommended.

Lake Ohrid has been under UNESCO protection since 1980 and is partially located in Albania. This unique lake lies at an altitude of about 700 meters, sandwiched between the mountains Petrino and Galicica

Day 2

Sightseeing Ohrid

Should you have arrived late yesterday, today you will have some nice time to explore Ohrid or enjoy and relax by the lake before heading out tomorrow for the first official ride of your cycling vacation.

Day 3

Ohrid-Sveti Naum, 55 km (450 hm)

The first part of today's route goes through the valley north of Ohrid. This vast valley is known for its fertile soil and many orchards. Cherries, apricots, grapes, apples and especially lots of plums. Narrow roads and sleepy farming villages characterize this area. The2nd part you will cycle along the eastern side of Lake Ohrid to the monastery of Sveti Naum. This 700-year-old monastery is also your overnight location for the day. A beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Ohrid.

Day 4

Sveti Naum-Otesevo, 38 km (800 hm)

On the program for today is a short but tough bike ride right through the heart of the Galicica National Park. You will cycle from Lake Ohrid to Lake Prespa. Both lakes are separated by the Galicia Mountains and are connected underground. Today's summit is at about 1550 meters altitude and reached after about 25 km. On the descent, a beautiful panorama of Lake Prespa unfolds. This lake lies partly in Albania, Greece and northern Macedonia. The hotel is located directly on Lake Prespa. For many bird watchers, this is a true paradise.

Day 5

Otesevo-Bitola, 54 km (400 hm)

On the way to Bitola! A beautiful drive through the valley full of fruit trees overlooking the giant mountain range of Pelister National park. Bitola is a lively (historic) city and was known as the trading city of the Balkans until the beginning of the last century. The Ottoman rule of the past is still well reflected in the streetscape: the Ottoman architecture, the cobblestones in the shopping street and Bitola's bazaar.

Located in the heart of the city, the hotel is built in typical Macedonian style with its own museum!

Day 6

Bitola-Florina, 45 km (300 hm) or 65 km (800 hm)

You will have a choice of 2 different distances today and pass the border with Greece. Florina is the capital of the Florina department and is located on the Sakoulevas River, amidst forests at an altitude of 700 meters. The long route makes a loop through a nature reserve that includes a substantial climb. After a beautiful descent through the valley, you will reach Florina.

A visit to the hotel's rooftop terrace for a drink is highly recommended.

Day 7

Florina-Agios Panteleimon, 65 km (500 hm)

You will cycle north today to a cluster of lakes, the largest of which is Lake Vegoritida. The lakes are interconnected by a variety of canals and tunnels. Lake Vegoritida is a haven for rare birds and is a protected nature reserve. The first 25 km are almost flat before the road gradually begins to rise to an altitude of 950 meters. Then you will descend through a region said to be among the four best wine regions in the world. This is due to the location of the wine region. The last part of this ride you will cycle along the lake to today's final destination . A visit to the renowned winery Alpha Estates is included in the group tour.

Day 8

Agios Panteleimon-Kastoria, 80 km (600 hm)

You will depart southwest today for one of the longest rides of this cycling vacation. The first section is almost flat and takes you through the village of Amindeo and along Lake Chimaditida, a stopping place for pelicans, among others. After 30 km comes a not too difficult climb of over 10 km. Arriving at the top, a beautiful panorama unfolds over the valley with Lake Kastoria in the distance. After a long descent, you will reach the historic town of Kastoria, also your overnight location for the next two days.

Day 9

Rest day or short ride around Kastoria, 9 km

Kastoria is a nice old town with plenty to do. It lies partly on a peninsula amid a large lake surrounded by sycamores. While driving across the peninsula, you will pass the caves of the "dragon" (Spileo tou Drakou). This cave system several lakes, is an absolute attraction. Kastoria is characterized by many beautiful mansions and Byzantine monuments.

Day 10

Kastoria-Grevena, 78 km (1,200 hm)

Today you will cycle south to Grevena. The special composition of the earth in this area lends itself perfectly to the cultivation of legumes, such as lentils and beans. After about 25 km, the landscape begins to become significantly more hilly and the route continues through one of Greece's most important natural areas. Wolves and brown bears are still observed in the higher elevations of this area. The route continues through an undulating landscape past streams and villages with short climbs presenting themselves at a rapid pace, before reaching the provincial town of Grevena.

Day 11

Grevena-Kastraki, 64 km (800 hm)

You can get ready for the highlight of this cycling vacation: Meteora! The views are beautiful me a vast landscape and in the distance circling birds of prey.

This crazy area on the banks of the Pinios River is characterized by monasteries built on tall rocky pillars. Once this Thessalian plain was an inland sea, and centuries of wind and water erosion have given these rock formations their specific and difficult to negotiate appearance. The overnight location for the next two days is literally next to these rock formations and waking up to this view is a sight to behold!

Day 12

Rest day or round trip Meteora/Pinios Valley, 58 km (400 hm)

Lovers for a final bike ride are presented with a scenic course overlooking limestone rock formations topped by impressive monasteries. People began building these monasteries in the 11th century. Using ropes and ladders, the building materials were lifted to the top, real monk's work! This area also lends itself to great hiking.

Day 13

After breakfast, your cycling trip ends.

Of course, you can add one or several nights. You may prefer a trip to Tessaloniki from where you may have arranged your return flight. The city named after Alexander the Great's sister. A city of culture, history, architecture and last but not least, fantastic food!
Ladadika used to be a neighborhood of commerce. Today it is home to many traditional restaurants. The old buildings have been refurbished in the original old style and are now the center of nightlife. In short, a wonderful setting to end your cycling vacation.

This crazy area on the banks of the Pinios River is characterized by monasteries built on tall rocky pillars. Once this Thessalian plain was an inland sea, and centuries of wind and water erosion have given these rock formations their specific and difficult to negotiate appearance. The overnight location for the next two days is literally next to these rock formations and waking up to this view is a sight to behold!

Day 12

Rest day or round trip Meteora/Pinios Valley, 58 km (400 hm)

Lovers for a final bike ride are presented with a scenic course overlooking limestone rock formations topped by impressive monasteries. People began building these monasteries in the 11th century. Using ropes and ladders, the building materials were lifted to the top, real monk's work! This area also lends itself to great hiking.

Day 13

After breakfast, your cycling trip ends.

Of course, you can add one or several nights. You may prefer a trip to Tessaloniki from where you may have arranged your return flight. The city named after Alexander the Great's sister. A city of culture, history, architecture and last but not least, fantastic food!
Ladadika used to be a neighborhood of commerce. Today it is home to many traditional restaurants. The old buildings have been refurbished in the original old style and are now the center of nightlife. In short, a wonderful setting to end your cycling vacation.

Day 1

Arrival.

Upon arrival there is an approximately 15-minute transfer to the first hotel in Ohrid. In and around Ohrid there is plenty to do. Ohrid is a true open-air museum with beautiful old churches and a maze of narrow streets must be seen. A boat ride on one of the oldest lakes in the world is also highly recommended.

Lake Ohrid has been under UNESCO protection since 1980 and is partially located in Albania. This unique lake lies at an altitude of about 700 meters, sandwiched between the mountains Petrino and Galicica

Day 2

Sightseeing Ohrid

Should you have arrived late yesterday, today you will have some nice time to explore Ohrid or enjoy and relax by the lake before heading out tomorrow for the first official ride of your cycling vacation.

Day 3

Ohrid-Sveti Naum, 55 km (450 hm)

The first part of today's route goes through the valley north of Ohrid. This vast valley is known for its fertile soil and many orchards. Cherries, apricots, grapes, apples and especially lots of plums. Narrow roads and sleepy farming villages characterize this area. The2nd part you will cycle along the eastern side of Lake Ohrid to the monastery of Sveti Naum. This 700-year-old monastery is also your overnight location for the day. A beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Ohrid.

Day 4

Sveti Naum-Otesevo, 38 km (800 hm)

On the program for today is a short but tough bike ride right through the heart of the Galicica National Park. You will cycle from Lake Ohrid to Lake Prespa. Both lakes are separated by the Galicia Mountains and are connected underground. Today's summit is at about 1550 meters altitude and reached after about 25 km. On the descent, a beautiful panorama of Lake Prespa unfolds. This lake lies partly in Albania, Greece and northern Macedonia. The hotel is located directly on Lake Prespa. For many bird watchers, this is a true paradise.

Day 5

Otesevo-Bitola, 54 km (400 hm)

On the way to Bitola! A beautiful drive through the valley full of fruit trees overlooking the giant mountain range of Pelister National park. Bitola is a lively (historic) city and was known as the trading city of the Balkans until the beginning of the last century. The Ottoman rule of the past is still well reflected in the streetscape: the Ottoman architecture, the cobblestones in the shopping street and Bitola's bazaar.

Located in the heart of the city, the hotel is built in typical Macedonian style with its own museum!

Day 6

Bitola-Florina, 45 km (300 hm) or 65 km (800 hm)

You will have a choice of 2 different distances today and pass the border with Greece. Florina is the capital of the Florina department and is located on the Sakoulevas River, amidst forests at an altitude of 700 meters. The long route makes a loop through a nature reserve that includes a substantial climb. After a beautiful descent through the valley, you will reach Florina.

A visit to the hotel's rooftop terrace for a drink is highly recommended.

Day 7

Florina-Agios Panteleimon, 65 km (500 hm)

You will cycle north today to a cluster of lakes, the largest of which is Lake Vegoritida. The lakes are interconnected by a variety of canals and tunnels. Lake Vegoritida is a haven for rare birds and is a protected nature reserve. The first 25 km are almost flat before the road gradually begins to rise to an altitude of 950 meters. Then you will descend through a region said to be among the four best wine regions in the world. This is due to the location of the wine region. The last part of this ride you will cycle along the lake to today's final destination . A visit to the renowned winery Alpha Estates is included in the group tour.

Day 8

Agios Panteleimon-Kastoria, 80 km (600 hm)

You will depart southwest today for one of the longest rides of this cycling vacation. The first section is almost flat and takes you through the village of Amindeo and along Lake Chimaditida, a stopping place for pelicans, among others. After 30 km comes a not too difficult climb of over 10 km. Arriving at the top, a beautiful panorama unfolds over the valley with Lake Kastoria in the distance. After a long descent, you will reach the historic town of Kastoria, also your overnight location for the next two days.

Day 9

Rest day or short ride around Kastoria, 9 km

Kastoria is a nice old town with plenty to do. It lies partly on a peninsula amid a large lake surrounded by sycamores. While driving across the peninsula, you will pass the caves of the "dragon" (Spileo tou Drakou). This cave system several lakes, is an absolute attraction. Kastoria is characterized by many beautiful mansions and Byzantine monuments.

Day 10

Kastoria-Grevena, 78 km (1,200 hm)

Today you will cycle south to Grevena. The special composition of the earth in this area lends itself perfectly to the cultivation of legumes, such as lentils and beans. After about 25 km, the landscape begins to become significantly more hilly and the route continues through one of Greece's most important natural areas. Wolves and brown bears are still observed in the higher elevations of this area. The route continues through an undulating landscape past streams and villages with short climbs presenting themselves at a rapid pace, before reaching the provincial town of Grevena.

Day 11

Grevena-Kastraki, 64 km (800 hm)

You can get ready for the highlight of this cycling vacation: Meteora! The views are beautiful me a vast landscape and in the distance circling birds of prey.
